About me

I became homeless at the age of twelve, living on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio. Even though keeping in mind that work was a good way to keep myself healthy and sane, there was never enough money and support to actually be successful.

Exploitation was probably the biggest factor in keeping me poor. After a while being poor is just a way of life, and not a bad one. How people cope with their fortune or misfortune is what would make it a good life or a bad one.

I was trained to be a machinist when I was 17 years old. By the time I turned 18 in Cleveland, ohio, the Civil rights movement was going strong. As the industry in Cleveland were suppose to hire blacks to reach a quota, the industries just started hiring temp agencies to avoid that. For every Machinist job I tried to get, they told me I had to work through an agency, which of course paid me minimum wage.

I have been all over the country doing different types of work, from the pipeyards in Texas, the shipyards in Alabama, the kitchens of Atlanta, manufacturing in Ohio, and everything in between. Temporary jobs meant just that. Any plans that were ever made, there was always someone there to throw a wrench in my spokes.

Even with the skills of a machinist, the first advantage for the company was to know what financial position you were in, in order to exploit your wage. They are never jobs that you could stay at for very long mostly because they were not paying enough to meet your needs.

I have been back and forth accross the country well over 40 times, and quite a few just hitchhiking. When the work ran out at one place, it was best to go to another. After President Reagan endorsed the temporary labor agencies, you could not get very much above minimum wage.

Living poor wasn’t a bad thing at the time. Work kept you healthy, the minimum wage was actually livable. My first job paid me $10.61 per day. I paid my room rent, three meals, transportation, and had money for the weekend.

The reason that I advocate so strongly for the homeless now is because wherever you go there are less and less services available, and more and more money, (granted and donated) that seems to go anywhere, except the homeless. This has become a major American Industry, that has made cattle out of the people they claim to serve. The industry thrives on compassionate people by claiming to help, and then create the barriers themselves to solicit more funds.
